NFC - Norwegian Flyfishers Club

When one thinks of salmon fishing in Norway, then the mighty untamed river Gaula will spring to mind for many an angler. And with it consistently being in the top 3 rivers in Norway for catches and weight, this shouldn´t be a surprise. The famous Norwegian Flyfishers Club – more commonly known as NFC, perhaps describes Gaula best, with beats both below and above Gaulfossen, it gives the angler an honest chance of catching a dream fish in any water level.

Location

Støren, Norway

Fish

Atlantic salmon

Season

June-August

Information

NFC, with its own home pool where it is possible to see salmon travelling near the bank, sits on the river Gaula near the village of Støren and is only a 45-minute drive from the metropolitan city of Trondheim.

With diverse beats on the middle and lower sections of the Gaula; the angler will fish excellent chances in whatever water conditions they may meet.

ACCOMODATION

In 2012, Per Arneberg took over the ownership of NFC, and in 2013 the lodge was renovated and further upgraded in 2014 with an extra wing. It now offers capacity for up to 14 fishermen in a variety of single and double rooms and suites. With this addition, a wellness center with sauna and a massage room was also added.

Before a day’s fishing, you will be offered breakfast served typically from 07.00 where you will be offered different options every day. Lunch is served back at the lodge at noon. Alternatively, the chefs will make a picnic including soup, sandwiches, salads, fruit, snacks and cold drinks to enjoy either riverside. Dinner is served back at the lodge at 18.00

The lodge serves as focal and meeting point for all the anglers and guests with perfectly anointed bedrooms, wifi, lounge and sitting areas as well as a small bar. The lodge has a fly shop and dry area for storing your waders in between fishing.

Non-Angling Activities

Although fly fishing for Atlantic salmon is the main activity, the Lodge can help with non-fishing activities for the non-fishing guest. Trondheim is a metropolitan city, less than one hour away, with fantastic restaurants and cultural events.

Internet / Communications

For your convenience, the Lodge also offers free high-speed wireless access. Phone signal is available throughout the valley.

FISHING

Whether it be high, medium or low water; below the Gaulfoss (which ensure good fishing in the early season), or above the Gaulfoss and in the tributaries. No matter what the present circumstances may be, each fisherman has equal opportunity to fish prime beats during those specific conditions within that 24 hour period. One could literally spend all day on the river, if you had the energy and stamina! The rotation is split into four 6-hour sessions for every 2 anglers, where you will rotate throughout all the beats with your companion through the space of the week getting to try the beats at different times of the day/night. All beats ran by NFC are flyfish only. Due to the location of the beats up and down the river, a car is needed to get you around. If flying in to Trondheim, we highly recommend hiring a car at the airport.

Being one of a few rivers in the area that are not built out for hydroelectricity, the river is untamed which means that water levels will constantly be changing. NFC have carefully picked the diverse beats which accommodate the changes to the water flow throughout the season, meaning that whenever you come, there should be beats which will give you an excellent chance.

Guiding is optional, but for first timers to the beats and especially the river, we recommend hiring a guide, if not for the entire week, at least for the first few days. As the river is untamed, the water levels can change dramatically though the week – especially if there has been rainfall in the area as the catchment area is enormous. This will also help you prioritise the most productive weeks during the week allowing you to rest as needed. The guides and staff all speak perfect English, and you will find them to be very professional, dedicated and competent. You will also find that the lodge staff are also competent anglers and will have time to give you hints and tips. Should you choose a guide, they will be on your call for 8 hours of that day. The guides have an intimate knowledge of the river and will work hard to help you with your fishing and selection of equipment and flies and how to fish a certain pool.

Depending on the time of the season, we recommend having a larger rod with you, for casting larger flies and heavy lines in the high and cold water – typically the first weeks of June and as the river drops and temperature in the water increases, to consider bringing a lighter rod. Although Gaula is a wide river, a short rod (switch or single hander) is ideal when fishing the Bua River – a tributary to Gaula but also for dry fly fishing when the water allows.

TRAVEL

NFC is one hour’s drive from Trondheim, Værnes airport. There are several major airlines who either fly direct to Trondheim from the major hubs in Europe, or via Oslo – the main airport in Norway. We highly recommend hiring a car from the airport if travelling directly to the lodge.

When is the best time to visit?
The season starts on the first of June and ends on 31st August with the early runs holding the largest salmon. Fresh fish will enter the river all the way up through the season. As the rivers drop, lighter lines will be more necessary and allows for using different tactics such as dry flies and skating flies.
