KAU TAPEN LODGE

Kau Tapen has become a household name for anglers across the world searching for the enigmatic sea run brown trout. The lodge itself, takes its name from the native Indian Ona language meaning “House of Fishing” and started as the brainchild of Jorge Donovan and Jacqueline De Las Carreras back in 1985.

Information

Even to this day it still holds it fame around the world for several current world record sea trout but also for impeccable service and accommodation which would be hard to beat in many major metropolitan cities. Celebrating 40 years in 2025 since its birth, it still remains as the lodge that others compare itself to.

The lodge sits perfectly situated to reach the 16km of water that it fishes of the middle section of the Rio Grande and can also boast several kilometres of the lower Rio Menendez – a much smaller river where a single hand rod is perfect; yet with just the same strain and size of fish.  The average weight of the fish is around 12lb and each year fish of 25lb are caught and it is not uncommon for at least one 20lb fish to be caught on a weekly basis.

Typically, the lodge hosts 10 anglers a week and has an 80% return rate; testimony to the high standards that the lodge sets. Coupled with some of the easiest wading we have ever encountered, with fishing from both banks, it is no wonder so many people like to return.

ACCOMODATION

Kau Tapen has a maximum capacity for ten rods (12 at the beginning and end of the season) per week, all accommodated in spacious, en-suite single rooms with maid and laundry service. It offers amenities such as massage, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and a drying room for wet gear.

Guests will also find a fully equipped tackle shop with flies, rods, reels, lines, and clothing. There is also the possibility to hire rods on request. If you should lack anything, the lodge will do its utmost to attain it.

The large living room with fireplace as its centre stage, opens up to a serene vista of the Menendez and Rio Grande valleys. Guests also have full use of the lodge’s fly tying table, should one find time to tie up a fly that the lodge might not stock in its vast number of flies.

Kau Tapen’s chef and house staff are experienced and are there to accommodate your requests. After an enjoyable day on the river, you will be served lunch at the lodge’s dining room or in the conservatory, dining on gourmet food including the regionally representative meats such as the famous beef, Patagonian lamb, seafood, including the king crab and other dishes that the chef is known for. And don’t forget to save space for the desserts! The famous Argentinian asado will also be held on one of the days.

A 3-course meal will also be served in the evenings with appetisers normally shared in the relaxing sitting room and at the fully stocked bar where you will have the chance to share a tail or two over a drink. Fine Argentinian wines are served at both lunch and dinner, carefully chosen to match the meals. One thing that can be guaranteed is that you will not go hungry!

Non-Angling Activities and Options

This is a fishing-focused destination with very few non-angling options.

Internet / Communications

The lodge has Wi-Fi available for guests.

FISHING

The fishing schedule, of approximately 9 hours; is split in to two sessions – a morning session and an evening session. The morning session typically starts just after breakfast and you will fish until around 13.00 where lunch will be served back at the lodge. After lunch, you may enjoy a siesta and prepare for the evening session which will typically start around 17.00 and fish until dusk. In the months of December and January this will normally be a little later to capitalise on the magical dusk fishing hours. The average drive is 15 minutes from the lodge to the pool, taken on well-kept dirt roads. At least once during the week, you will also have the opportunity to fish the Menendez River and we would say, a river not to miss!

With 10 rods and 6 guides; you will typically rotate your guide each day. This leads to fishing a wide range of different techniques that may not only help you land that dream fish on this trip; but also open possibilities when fishing your local waters.

The middle section of the Rio Grande contains the majority of the holding water where the sea trout will remain until spawning time, making the Kau Tapen hard to beat. Along with very accessible pools, extremely easy wading due to the fine gravel and slow flow of the river; fishing these waters gives every chance of hooking and landing that fish of a lifetime. The Rio Grande winds it way across the landscape, creating undercut banks where large sea trout love to lie to keep out of the strong sunlight. Typically, the sea trout seem to lie near cut banks during the middle of the day, though in low water, you will also eagerly find them in the faster necks of pools. Then as dusk approaches, the fish will move from the cut banks and into the middle of the pools and prepare to aggressively take your fly. Many a tale has been told about “that” fish.

Even though the lodge shares some of its water with other neighbouring lodges owned by different estancias, there is a common agreement in place which means that the pools are not by fished by another lodge over the same day or session. In fact, with so much water you will rarely see another person apart from your guide and co-angler.

Being such a famous lodge; it also means that the guides have to meet these standards. You will meet guides, both local, Argentinian and also international. Each will have different tips and tricks to guide you through the week – where in one pool you may be nymphing and in the next pool, it could easily be a dry fly. They will be equipped with nets and will assist guests with weighing and releasing their catches.

Contrary to its name – the Rio Grande, and in particular in the middle section, is not a wide river. A double handed rod in the 12-13 foot range should suffice for most fishing, complemented with a switch rod or a single handed rod of 9’6” – 10” for those that might like to try some different techniques. Even though the wind can be ferocious on Tierra del Fuego, with gusts easily reaching over 100km/h, you will be reminded that the wind is your friend and having so many pools to fish; it means that even on the windiest of the days the guides can place you in pools where the wind is not straight in your face.
