World's End Lodge

World´s End Lodge – the lodge perfectly named which lies at the southernmost tip of Argentina on the island of Tierra del Fuego – has become a haven for sea trout anglers looking for something different.

Location

Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

Fish

Sea Trout

Season

December- April

Information

The lodge, located 200km north east of Ushuaia and approximately 180km south of Rio Grande, sits perched above the lower stretches of the Rio Irigoyen with fantastic views towards the sea and then west towards the mountains which give it its birth. Boasting 5 zones, with approximately 24km of water, and being the only lodge on the entire river, you are in for a unique trip. Here you will meet a smaller, more intimate river than the Rio Grande – where wild horses and cattle roam free, where you will see parakeets perched in the trees overhanging the river, in an environment where nature is king. We believe that the sea trout of the Irigoyen fight harder pound for pound than those of the famous Grande and Gallegos. The average weight of the fish is around 8-10lb and each year fish over 20lb are caught – your challenge is to ensure that the sea trout doesn´t reach any of the underwater features before you have a chance to try and control the fight. Good luck! With the option of also fishing for seatrout in the estuary, along with the chance of catching large robalo, World´s End Lodge is a very unique and memorable place to fish.

The lodge hosts only 4 anglers a week and with so many pools at your disposal, coupled with extremely easy wading and very short walks from the car to the pool, with fishing from both banks, whilst offering personalised attention and warm hospitality it is no wonder so many people like to return.

ACCOMODATION

World´s End Lodge, located on a remote 45,000-acre ranch, has a maximum capacity for four rods per week, all accommodated in spacious, en-suite single rooms with maid and laundry service. Although the lodge is rustic, it has all the main elements that an any angler requires to be able to enjoy their trip. The lodge is split into 3 buildings – firstly, the accommodation building which includes a drying room for wet gear and a communal area including wood burning fire and sitting area – perfect for relaxing after a session on the water. Bedrooms are single occupancy and ensuite. The second building is the tackle shop which stocks the most important items at hand such as flies, leaders and tippet material. Last, but definitely not least, is the dining and living room building where you will enjoy all your meals. This building overlooks the river with fantastic views both up and down the river and valley and towards the sea. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine after a fishing session. The views will remind you that you are at the end of the world. Should you lack anything, the lodge will do its utmost to attain it from either Rio Grande or Ushuaia.

After an enjoyable day on the river, you will be served lunch at the lodge’s dining room with dishes that the chef is known for. The staff takes care of guests in typical Argentine style with a never-ending supply of warm hospitality. Food is a very important part of the fishing day as the lodge keeps to the ethos that any hard session can be rectified with a good meal and an excellent glass of wine. The famous Argentinian asado will be held on one of the days. A 3-course meal will also be served in the evenings with appetisers normally shared in the relaxing sitting area where you will have the chance to share a tail or two over a drink. The menus consist of a mix between gourmet and classic Argentine cuisine where the perfectly paired wines and the best cuts of meat stand out, as well as the best lamb in the world, a specialty that the chef prepares every week.

Non-Angling Activities and Options

This is a fishing-focused destination with very few non-angling options.

Internet / Communications

The lodge has Wi-Fi available for guests.

FISHING

The fishing schedule, of approximately 9 hours; is split in to two sessions – a morning session and an evening session. The morning session typically starts around 09.00 just after breakfast and you will fish until around 13.00 where lunch will be served back at the lodge. After lunch, you may enjoy a siesta and prepare for the evening session which will typically start around 17.00 and fish until dusk.

Tierra del Fuego is home to some of the largest sea run trout in the world with the Rio Grande perhaps the most famous sea trout destination in the world. Nor does it come as a surprise that fishing for them involves wading wide rivers with a double handed rod on the famous Rio Gallegos and Rio Grande. The Rio Irigoyen, however, is a much narrower river and tree-lined system which is better fished with a single hand rod and good accurate casts of no more than 20m. All fishing is whilst wading but distances from the car is no more than 200-300m in extremely easy wading conditions, making it comfortable for all capabilities. For those less able, the guides are known to drive you as close as possible to the action.

The Irigoyen river has 24km of fishable water, split into 5 zones, or beats where zones 1-3 are easily accessible via a 4×4.  The average drive is 15 minutes from the lodge to the pool with the closest pool being a mere 5-minute walk and the longest drive being approximately 45 minutes to reach zone 4 and 5 (the two uppermost zones) which can be done by walking from the car or going onwards taking the amphibious ATV. During your week you may also have the opportunity to fish the Malenguena river – which in the lower pools acts like an estuary of the Irigoyen, and we would say, a trip not to miss!

The tree-lined river appeals to the technical angler, where you will get to enjoy deep pools, underwater structures, including logjams, faster water all whilst wild horses watch from the bank.

The Malenguena river is a much slower paced river, more akin to Danish rivers or the rivers of the flat areas of southwest Norway. Typically, this river is reached by 4×4 driving along the shoreline and the lower pools are fished on the tide, giving you a chance to try something totally different. The upper pools are more like the Irigoyen, with trees lining the banks of the river.

You will find your guides to be dedicated and have grown up fishing for trout and sea trout and are very well versed in speaking English. The guides have years of experience fishing in Tierra del Fuego and will provide invaluable support towards your success on this technical and hypnotising river. As the guides have been there for several years, they are well worth listening to and will have many tricks up their sleeve. Please do not hesitate to speak to them, should you want to try something new – be that either dry fly, skating or nymphing, they know it all. The guides are equipped with nets and will assist guests with measuring and safely releasing their catches. With 4 rods and 2 guides; you will typically rotate your guide each day. This leads to fishing a wide range of different techniques that may not only help you land that dream fish on this trip.

Unlike the Rio Grande, where a double handed rod in the 12-13 foot range would be the norm, the Rio Irigoyen is a small river where a single-handed fast action 7-8# rod of 9’6” – 10” would be the recommend tool of choice with a small switch rod to compliment it. Even though the wind can be ferocious on Tierra del Fuego, with gusts easily reaching over 100km/h, here you will find more trees to break the wind especially on the middle and upper zones. But even on the windiest days – the inherent winding nature of the river means that you will normally find a pool which will not have the wind in your face. Fishing the Irigoyen River requires accurate casting with a single-handed rod and floating lines. The river is intimate and full of holding structure on the banks and below the surface – perfect places for sea trout to hide.

Fishing the Irigoyen is not a river for numbers, but every fish hooked is a reward for hard work and the next one could well be that fish of a lifetime, both in terms of size and memory. World’s End Lodge is one of the most unique and rewarding trophy sea trout fly fishing destinations we know of. Although fish over 25 pounds have been caught, anglers should expect an average catch rate of 2 fish/day, and an average size of 8-10lbs.

In addition to the sea-run browns, there is also an opportunity to fish for robalo (sea bass) in the river mouth. These fish range up to 15 pounds and, depending on the tide, can be caught in good numbers.

TRAVEL

Guests fly into Buenos Aires International Airport, and we highly recommend at least one overnight stay in the city, giving yourself time to relax after a long flight and acclimatise to the fabulous country. Commercial airlines typically fly out from the domestic airport in Buenos Aires to the airport of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego in about 3 hours. From there, the lodge will collect you and transfer you to the lodge. It is a 3 ½ – 4 hour transfer with a pitstop taken in the town of Tolhuin. Transfers to/from Ushuaia airport are included for in the standard rates.

When is the best time to visit?
The season starts in late December as the sea trout begin to enter the river in small numbers with more fish entering throughout the months January, February and March. The season finishes in the middle of April, but fresh runs do occur even come the end of April. Due to this, we would say that there is no prime time for World´s End Lodge as the fishing is steady throughout the season.
